Bergerac
Wine Region
Eymet is situated
in the heart of the Bergerac and Duras wine appellations, not
far from St Emilion, Cahors, and Bordeaux.
Bergerac: It has long been difficult for the wines of Bergerac
to escape from the shadow of Bordeaux's more serious wine reputation,
but thanks to a combination of lower yields, and much more sophisticated
use of oak, pioneering producers such as Luc de Conti, and a new
dynamism in wine production, some truly fine wine is being made,
often at more appealing prices.
The grapes are very similar to the Bordeaux varieties, merlot,
cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and malbec for the reds and
semillon, sauvignon blanc, and muscadelle for the whites.
Within the Bergerac region are many individual appellations -
including Monbazillac (sweet white, hand harvested, more exuberant
and sprightly than the best young Sauternes), Pecharmant (oaked
reds in the image of claret), Montravel (dry white wines), Rosette
(relatively unknown, delicate, slightly sweet wines) and Saussignac
(sumptuously sweet white, made in distinctly small quantities).
